Glacier Bay Ahoy!

A misty cloak layers the shoulders of the wilderness.  Groans and chants echo from the deep fjords and inlets. The Bay is about to hunker down for the winter creating an impasse for human cargo and pleasure cruisers.  Some may say that the day is bleak but I feel a deep connection with this magical place.  Rain sprinkles down my straps and cords as I become entranced in the crystalline blue water.  A foggy calm morning has announced our entry into Glacier Bay.  Apparently we are circumnavigating this bay for an hour or more making sure the photographers can attempt to portray the essence of the glacier on digital memory cards or celluloid.

The icy mist rolls lazily over the calm sea. Whales are anticipated, offering respite to the icy desert.  Captain George Vancouver found this icy strait many years ago and imprint of this discovery are a vast difference to the global warming days of now.  My compartments sag as I consider the plight of the polar bears and other endangered wild life in this unforgiving frontier.  Navigating this historical strait is a reminder of the fragility of the region. Respect and awareness of all things living is our compass.

This living laboratory has particles frozen from over two hundred years ago - thick spruce tips and minerals kidnapped from places as remote as Hawaii.  The Reid Glacier is a remanent of the 4,000 foot glacier that holds a chronicle within its skin choosing the perfect moment for expulsion.

A glimmer of excitement akin to that of past explorers vibrates throughout my being.  They came to oblivion and went back to tell of the grand adventure. I can’t imagine how they pushed themselves past the limit of human condition to endure this merciless region.

Standing on the deck we observe that the sea is as glassy as a mirror reflecting the cotton wool clouds dotted in the sky.  Small icebergs are jetsam upon the aqua blue calmness of the watery mural. We are so close to this frozen time capsule that we could reach out and touch it.  Rocks and frozen bergs ebb gently toward our ship as our Captain; a Master mariner traverses our delicate visitation to this vestibule.

A silence falls over the ship as we witness and pay homage to the geological magnificence.  We are witnessing geological shifts as millions of years frozen memories fall into the ocean. The alchemy of our wonder is mind blowing and I am lost for words.
