On our recent overseas trip, the Techo and Harlequin witnessed some great technology in action in not-quite-everyday scenarios. For example, when we were cruising from Alaska back to Vancouver we crossed a chunk of the Pacific Ocean where the swell was 5 - 6 metres. Even with stabilisers, the MV Zuiderdam rolled about enough to cause the castored chairs in the Internet Lounge to move around the room unassisted, the Techo was on the Internet checking his eMails!! That was enabled through the use of LEOS (Low Earth Orbit Satellite arrays) and gyro-stabilised self-steering antennas onboard the ship. Other eye-openers we encountered were:
Cheap, (very cheap - even FREE when bundled with a cable TV package!) unlimited download broadband,
FREE wireless internet access in some cafes and coffee shops. In one Starbucks in Vancouver we saw at least 50% of the customers using laptops with their lattes!
Over the coming months, the Techo will explain some the the latest communications technology - in simplified terms, of course!
Till next time, be brave and browse!
