CRT or LCD? (. . . cont'd from October)

Last month we said we would look at the advantages/disadvantages of both the CRT monitors and LCD monitors. This month, we'll address the "issues" of LCD monitors.

LCD monitors have a "native resolution" and a display resolution. The larger the monitor in inches (across the diagonal as discussed last month) the higher the "native resolution". Thus, a 17" LCD will have a "native resolution" of 1280 x 1024 pixels but can be set to display less than that, say, 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600 pixels. The picture still fills the 17" display area but by a process called "partial pixelation" the edges of objects & text on the screen may appear to be slightly out of focus. This may not be an issue to most people but serious users like draughtsmen will want sharply defined edges and will run LCD monitors at their "native resolution"

Another issue that probably won't affect any but the most pernickety gamers or action movie fans, is response time - the time it takes a pixel to light up to its full brightness and extinguish again. Anything more than 8 milliseconds response time will result in smearing, tailing and shadowing on fast motion objects.

CRT monitors, provided they are late models - say, 1996 onwards, can generally be set to use almost any resolution  up to their stated maximum without any degradation of displayed objects and have response times for the pixels of less than 1 millisecond. The drawbacks are:
   - size and weight
   - viewable area is less than the screen size due to the need to "mask" the front of the CRT. A 17" CRT will generally only have a viewable area of 16" and even then some "edge distortion" may be visible.

POEM TO FLY
I am a person
with wings of a butterfly
children being slaughtered
shedding utter cries
I am a girl
with a voice to be spoken
today i met a boy
heart prepare to be broken
I want to run away
go so far
look back and not worry
where you are
I am a poem
words meaning so much
mouth trying to speak them
sweetly forced to a hush
I am words
writing down a life
now erasing it slowly
I'm giving up this fight.
