CRT or LCD?

What on earth is that?? Actually it's the technical terms for your PC monitor or display. A CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor is the large, heavy, glass-fronted beast that takes up so much real estate on your desk that there is no room for anything else! On the other hand, an LCD, (Liquid Crystal Display) is slimmer, lighter and more expensive! LCD's may also be known as TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) displays.
Both monitor (or display) types come in various sizes and resolutions (more on resolution later) and as a general rule, the larger the display area, the dearer the monitor. Display area (or monitor size) is expressed as a single measurement, which is the diagonal. Thus, a 17" standard (4:3 ratio) monitor measures 17" (why we still use inches for computer monitors in a metricated country is still a mystery to me) across the diagonal from bottom-left to top-right corners. But what's all this about ratios? The 4:3 standard ratio means that the display area is 3 units down (vertical dimension) for every 4 units across (horizontal), which when expressed in pixels (or dots - the standard for measuring display resolution) will give display parameters (resolution) of 640 pixels across x 480 pixels down - usually expressed as 640 x 480 resolution. This holds true for higher resolutions like 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024 pixels.  Widescreens have a ratio of 16:9 and commonly found in LCD panels, mainly on Laptop computers, but now becoming more prevalent as desktop monitors with resolutions of 1280 x 720 pixels.
