Greetings Cosmic Friends,
February is an extremely short month. Not only is there only twenty eight days there is only one significant moon lunation. The New Moon on February 14 at 1:51PM 26 degrees Aquarius. This quirky Aquarian New Moon offers new direction that takes you off the beaten track. The words of Ralph Waldo Emerson are appropriate now. “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Both Chiron and Neptune conjoin at the New Moon, offering a spiritual vision for your personal utopia. Healing is possible as you show compassion to the wounded parts of both yourself and others. Spiritual energy is high as Neptune opens a doorway to the Divine.
New Moon wishes that are appropriate at this time are:
• Inventive solutions
• Seeing the future
• Humanitarian attitudes
• Revelations
• Humour
• Friends
• Avoiding excessive detachment
• Operating from a larger worldview
• Excitement
• Unexpected results
• Surprises
The Sun is in the eleventh house – friends and associations. It is a social time of year and connecting with like-minded friends is opportune. Social networking is a prime meeting place as computerisation fits nicely with the Uranian desire for technological invention.
February is a number two month which is a month to consolidate new changes and allow family matters to come to the fore. It is also a time for reading the small print and dotting the ‘I’s and crossing the ‘t’s’.
On the 14th of February we have Valentines Day. I won’t write about this significant date in the lover’s calendar as I will publish a more explicit article in Julia’s Journal on that date. Instead I would rather focus on the fact that this date is also the entrance of the Year of the Tiger.
The Year of the Tiger is a time to be active, adaptable and seize new opportunities. Power, distinctive and fast, the Tiger commands respect – and fear. This will be an intense time of change. Some animal signs will relish the new possibilities as they emerge and other will be decidedly uneasy.
The Tiger year will create opportunities for us all. And for those who are prepared to make the most of them, this can be a significant time. It is a year to be active and alert, seize the opportunities and use individual talents. For its problems and difficult moments, it has a lot of potential.
Our February 2010 tarot card is the Ten of Wands. The Ten of Wands implies that the individual is
overburdened and oppressed by having taken on more than he or she can deal with. The imagination has been stifled by too many worldly concerns, and some of the youthful daring and willingness to take risks has been lost. Certain things may need to be relinquished so that the creative process can be refreshed and a new cycle may begin.
In March will begin to explore the Court cards in the Wands suit so, watch this space.
The Goddess for February is Lilith. I honestly think that Lilith is quite often misunderstood. She is a Middle Eastern Goddess who is credited with bringing the gift of cultivation to human. She also represents great bounty, fruitfulness, and proliferation. Also known as Eve, Lilith was quite different in her interaction with Adam: she retained her integrity and existed as an equal with her first man. Lilith, like most goddesses, can also be a mysterious figure of intense introspection. Sometimes she is represented as menacing because of the overpowering nature of her deep knowledge and sexual energy. The lotus is the symbol of this complex goddess, and it reveals much about her nature. The fragrant a beautiful flower emerges from the pond’s dark, muddy depths, to be mindful of our dark side and deepen our integrity so that our true, radiant selves can blossom forth. See the complexity of this goddess? I suppose like all women she only wants to know the truth.
To temper the power and passion of Lilith I’ve chosen an Angel card for this month’s column. The Angel is Isaiah and he says that, “it is a good time to give birth to new ideas and situations in your life. I am watching over you, and protecting you during these changes.”
To honour the Aquarian sun phase I have chosen a specific Aquarian gemstone. Yellow sapphire attracts wealth into the home and can be placed in cash boxes to increase prosperity and earnings. If worn, it should touch the body. Yellow sapphire stimulates the intellect and improves overall focus so that the bigger picture can be seen. As an elixir, it removes toxins.
In this number three year ruled by Jupiter it is important to see the big picture. Jupiter has just moved from Aquarius into Pisces so it is time for Pisceans to expand their horizons. Pisces have endured a strong Uranus transit over the past few years and therefore may feel a little shell shocked or in some cases far more resilient than they thought possible.
Enjoy this short month with lots of cosmic influences and I look forward to reconnecting on our Uranian highway of cyber-ville in March!
Love and Peace,
Harles
Dearest Jem,
G’Day from the Land Down Under! I am feeling rather patriotic right now. We’ve just had our Australia Day celebrations. It is a special time of year for us – a time of national pride and recognising Australian achievers.
This year our Prime Minister, Mr. Rudd acknowledged a man who is a tireless advocate for mental health in Australia as the Australian of the Year. He is, PROFESSOR PATRICK McGORRY (VIC) and Executive director of Orygen Youth Health and director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, he believes early intervention offers the greatest hope of recovery. Here is his story: http://www.abc.net.au/sundayprofile/stories/2800855.htm.
It was refreshing to learn that our Prime Minister had acknowledged this man and retrieved from the shadows and showcased the importance of mental health. I was pretty proud of Mr. Rudd and celebrated his choice. I thought yes, we are embracing a new era. This acknowledgement is a step in the right direction for change.
I read the news today that JD Salinger had passed away. I was sad as it represented an end of an era. I know that he lived most of his life as a recluse but I am confident that his thoughts, words and passion will live on. Just a thought, perhaps he is not really dead just venturing further into his reclusive hide-a-way?
Speaking of changes and end of an era we are about to leave the era of the Ox and entering the Tiger. I know you are a dragon so what is the potential for you this year?
As you know I am a water serpent (snake) and it seems to be a hectic year with lots of choices and social activity. That will be a change for this reclusive snake.
Whatever the year brings I am grateful for our enduring, loving supportive friendship and the unconditional love of my amazing and loyal family.
How has the new decade dawned for you so far, My Friend? Has 2010 began with a bang or a whimper?
Mine has been quite a civilised whimper so far. I have been quite calm and serene in my world. I’ve acknowledged with gratitude the choices and the landscape of my life. Life is beautiful and I feel massively blessed.
I hope that February finds you in a similar landscape in your wintry world in the Northern Hemisphere, Jem.
Until March, be well!
Love and Peace, Jar
Dear Jar,
Indeed, you are so correct about life being beautiful and how blessed we are! This morning I was awakened by the amber glow of the “Blue Moon” which granted us audience at 4 am. The beams lightly tickled my face, encouraging me to cast my sleepy eyes on this most luminous Queen of the Night Sky, and pay homage to the tides of my soul.
I was also awakened by water splashing on my face. It happened twice, and my first thought at this time of the morning was that the roof was leaking. As it turns out, my cat Felix was dipping his paw into the nightly glass of water I keep on a table next to my bed, shaking it vigorously and then licking it dry. He then unceremoniously jumped directly on my bladder as a sure-fire way to make sure Mommy was awake. Moon, water, cat. Who needs an alarm clock?
Episodes such as the one above keep the balance of joy and laughter in my life. I feel so fortunate to have an abundance of both.
Three cheers for Prime Minister Rudd for choosing Professor Patrick McGorry as Australian of the Year. As human beings on this planet, we have so many needs and issues to be addressed, and not nearly enough advocates who can find themselves in positions to make a difference. The going is tough at the top, and people sometimes get contaminated with power in the process of getting there. Kudos to Professor McGorry!
I am still observing the effects of the numerical significance of 2010 in my life, and will probably withhold judgment until more time has passed. The upcoming Year of the Tiger is supposed to prove to be rather lively and intense for dragons, and some of the readings I have encountered promise much tumult and possible illness for someone in the family. However, I will not create a neural path for those thoughts to follow and manifest! There are always possibilities, and I will allow them to unfold without attaching too much significance to what has not yet transpired.
What I will attach significance to is the wealth of spirit that finds its way into my life. I continually work at keeping my body strong, healthy and grounded, so it is a suitable place for that spirit to take up residence. In this coming year, I wish you much abundance, good health and the manifestation of your dearest wishes. Every day is a gift: to be experienced, cherished, assimilated and shared. Thank you for the ongoing gift of friendship – it is one I cherish and am happy to share with you!
Happy New Year and many blessings,
JEM
Greetings.
This month I have decided to write about peppermint. Most people are familiar with peppermint as mint sauce (served with lamb) or as peppermint tea. As a herb it is generally used for digestive complaints, as an essential oil it can be used for digestive complaints, particularly nausea, and to treat muscular aches and pains. Peppermint is often used to mask the unpleasant taste of other herbs.
This month’s recipe is for zucchini slice. It is quite nice either warm from the oven with salad, or cold in a lunchbox. I usually only make it when I have an excess of zucchinis because it’s an excellent way to serve this vegetable. With recent rainfall and hot weather my single zucchini plant is producing more zucchinis than my family can eat. Zucchini slice is a good answer to this problem. I think I got this recipe from my mother-in-law, but it is a fairly common dish.
Wishing you many good things
Moonhawk
Peppermint
There are a number of varieties of mint, in this case I’m discussing Mentha x piperita.
Peppermint is a low growing herb that is quite easy to cultivate. Plant peppermint isn spring, water it regularly, and before long you will have a lovely crop ready for use. It’s one downfall is, that like all members of the Lamiaceae family it has a nasty habit of spreading, usually through runners just beneath the surface. For this reason, peppermint is best cultivated in a pot.
Peppermint as a herb is generally prescribed to calm the digestive system, particularly where cramping is involved. It is particularly good for nausea, vomiting and relieving travel sickness.
Like chamomile tea, you need a good quality peppermint to make a good quality tea. Loose tea is far superior to teabags. To make peppermint tea, pour boiling water over 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile. Steep for at least 5 minutes, but no more than 10. Sip slowly. If you are using peppermint teat as a digestive, then it may make you burp, don’t worry, this is normal.
Peppermint essential oil is often used in blends for musculo-skeletal aches and pains because of its analgesic properties.
Peppermint essential oil is interesting because it causes a noticeably cooling effect, later followed by a warming effect as blood vessels dialate. This is why peppermint os sometimes said to be cooling and warming.
A practitioner of aromatic medicine may even use peppermint essential oil neat, or internally. Extreme care needs to be taken when doing this, as neat peppermint essential oil has some dangerous side effects. However, a qualified practitioner will be aware of these and work within parameters that make its use safe.
Peppermint as a herb is considered safe during pregnancy, so it may be useful for morning sickness. However, it’s use should be limited, and only used under supervision of a qualified herbalist.
While peppermint is good for indigestion, people with oesophageal reflux should avoid it’s use. Peppermint should also be avoided by people who have cholecystitis or a blockage in the bile duct.
While peppermint as a herb is relatively safe, there are a number of concerns around the use of peppermint essential oil. Peppermint should not be used on the face. Always, consult a trained, accredited therapist before using peppermint if you have any concerns.
Remember, always consult with a qualified practitioner before taking any herbs. The NHAA and ATMS both provide lists of accredited practitioners. The IAAMA will provide a list of accredited aromatherapists.
